This was my first illustration assignment from Boy’s Life, an absolutely wonderful magazine to work for, really cool stories to work with and Joe Connolly, one of the all time great art directors. This story was about a diver cleaning the tank of moray eels at a large city aquarium. Accidentally the eels were released from the holding tank before he finished. The eels are large and can be aggressive and dangerous. I was able to photograph an actual moray eel at The Chicago Aquarium standing on a step ladder in back behind the glass where the tanks are open on top. I stood on the ladder over the tank shooting photos while the aquarist held a fish and the eel popped out of the water to grab it. Amazing photo shoot, great assignment and the first of many more for Boy’s Life.(CLICK ON RIGHT SIDE OF PHOTO TO SEE SECOND ILLUSTRATION).
